Liberty Hill is where Georgetown's growth meets the real Hill Country: five-acre lots under live oaks, cedar draws, new master-planned communities and a lot of post oaks that didn't like the construction.
Liberty Hill sits on the San Gabriel's South Fork west of Georgetown, on pure Edwards limestone, and it's growing as fast as anywhere in the county — Santa Rita Ranch, Rancho Sienna, Stonewall Ranch, Orchard Ridge, Bryson's north side and the ranchette subdivisions along FM 1869, CR 200 and Highway 29 toward Bertram. The trees are what people come for: broad live oaks in the yards, post oaks on the ridges, cedar elms in the draws, and Ashe juniper on every slope nobody has cleared yet. The problems are the Hill Country's: cedar swallowing the view, shallow-rooted live oaks going over in a wet windstorm, post oaks dying three years after the builder graded the lot, and oak wilt moving through grafted groves.
Liberty Hill has its own tree preservation rules through its Unified Development Code and its own permit process; the county ETJ and unincorporated ranch land outside it have no tree rules at all beyond common sense. Do I need a permit to clear cedar on my Liberty Hill acreage?
Not for the cedar. Inside Liberty Hill's city limits and ETJ the tree ordinance protects native hardwoods by size, so the live oaks, post oaks and elms on the lot may need approval before removal; outside the ETJ on ranch land there's no city rule. We map the keep trees and the permit trees before the mulcher starts.
Why is my post oak dying two years after we built the house?
Post oaks are the least tolerant tree in Central Texas of what a build does to the roots: grading, fill, trenching, compaction and then a wet lawn. The decline is delayed, which is why it looks like it came from nowhere. Our arborist will tell you if it's a watch, a prune or a removal.
Can you get equipment down a caliche ranch road?
